goals die in the handoff


A surprising number of goals die in the handoff.

You have the conversation. You get excited. You say, We should do this. And then instead of taking a step right there, you hand it off to some vague future version of yourself through text messages, calendar holds, and good intentions.

That's often where the life goes out of it.

while the energy is warm

Today I sat with a friend and we decided to organize a small AI conference. Nothing huge. Twenty to fifty people. A room, some smart people, a reason to gather.

We could have said, Amazing. Let's figure it out later. Instead, we stayed put and started building. We made the logo. We started the invites. We spent maybe an hour on it.

By the end of that hour, we had about ten people ready to go.

That's the part I keep coming back to. The event became real not because we had every detail figured out, but because we took action while the energy was still warm.

action creates gravity

People often overestimate the value of planning and underestimate the value of immediate motion.

The first concrete move does a few things all at once:

  1. It turns an idea into something external.
  2. It shows you what the actual next problems are.
  3. It gives other people something real to join.

Before that first move, everything is theoretical. After it, the project starts pulling reality toward itself.

A lot of logistics only reveal themselves once you've already begun. The organizing team, the details, the follow-through, the small adjustments, all of that becomes easier once there's already something happening.

sometimes the meeting is the work

I learned this in a smaller way with a colleague too. We had a batch of emails to send. In theory, we could each go do them separately. That sounds efficient.

Instead, we used a standing 30-minute meeting to just sit there and get them done.

No extra planning. No deciding when we'd circle back. No little private negotiations with ourselves later in the day. We just used the shared container to finish the work.

Sometimes a meeting should not produce action items. Sometimes the meeting is the action.

don't leave empty-handed

Maybe this is the rule: don't leave the side of a goal without taking some action toward its completion.

Send the email. Make the invite. Draft the doc. Buy the domain. Text the first five people. Do something that makes the goal more real than it was five minutes ago.

Because once you walk away with nothing but intention, friction gets a vote. And friction is undefeated.

Don't leave the side of a goal empty-handed.
