The quality of your work does not define its perceived value. How you set expectations does.
Most people do not have time to measure you. They need shortcuts. You went to Harvard. You have a million followers. You sold a company. You have a Grammy. People use these markers to figure out where you stand. Fair or not, that is the game.
But even beyond credentials, there is something simpler and more accessible. Just saying what you charge for a service — even if you are giving it away — helps presence the value of a thing.
the mistake I made
I went to an event recently for high-net-worth individuals. I am not one of them, but I was there as a participant. Someone asked if I wanted to perform music. I said yes.
What I did not do was ask a single question about the arrangement.
I would love to. What is your budget for entertainment? Here are my typical rates.
Even though I was coming as a guest. Even though I might have done it for free. The question itself would have changed everything.
what gets lost without the question
Without it, I was not perceived as a professional. I was perceived as a hobbyist. Not someone with something real to offer, but someone filling time between the main attractions.
And it is not the organizer's fault. It is not the audience's fault. They had no frame. I gave them none.
I have done this right in other settings. I have said, This is a valuable art form, and I would like to be treated as such. When I said that, the response was different. My stay got comped. My performance got its own space. There was a baseline of respect for what I was offering.
The difference was not in the music. The difference was in the framing.
nobody is going to say it for you
Here is the hard truth: people are not going to watch you perform and say, Wow, you are incredible — let me pay you. That is a fantasy. You have to say it first.
I would love to perform. What is your budget? What does that look like?
Firmly. Cheerfully. Early. It does not have to be a hard conversation.
Even if you are willing to do something for free, it is worth asking the question. Because the question is not really about the money. It is about setting the frame so that your work is received at the level it deserves.
